Teaching children learning handwriting skills can be difficult when they have not yet obtained the fine motor skills necessary to grasp a pencil or crayon and controlling the lines they make with one.  Children learning handwriting skills poses challenges for many children Pre-K through 5th Grade.

My 5 year old son, Sawyer, is in Jr. Kindergarten this year and is having some confidence issues with writing his letters and numbers. He HATES writing because, from what I can tell, he thinks he doesn’t do it well.  He throws fits, cries, and refuses to practice writing his letters! I just try to get him to do something and not criticize. Keeping in mind he has an older brother in the 2nd grade, I also try not to compare abilities or express how he should be like him.

I was speaking with Sawyer’s teacher about this issue and she recommended I check out the following website and take home the kit for a few days to see if it’s something that Sawyer can find fun in making his handwriting more successful.  Confidence-building is HUGE at this stage!!

Whether you are a parent or teacher struggling with teaching a child handwriting skills from Pre-K through 5th Grade, you might find some very helpful tools at the Handwriting Without Tears website, www.HWTears.com(See the link under Sites Worth Visiting)
