Sending Your Child to Summer Camp

“If you have an artistic, creative child, don’t send him to a summer camp for jocks,” says Dale Atkins, author of “I’m OK, You’re My Parents.”

That seems pretty logical, but are there other things you might want to consider when sending your middle school children off to camp?

  • Do some in-depth research about any camp you are considering for your child. Go online for information. Ask other parents whose kids have experienced the camp. Visit the camp itself if that is feasible.
  • Send your child off to camp with a friend. This relieves some of the anxiety of leaving home alone.
  • Make the separation from home more comfortable by allowing your child to pack certain “comfort” items like a favorite stuffed animal or a picture of the family.
  • Send along addresses, note cards, and stamps. Don’t demand that your child take the time to jot a note, but make it easy for him to do. Take the time to write a letter or two yourself. Getting mail at camp is great!! (Cookies are even better…if allowed.) Let your child know you’re thinking of him or her and praying for them.

Camp is usually one of the first separations from home. It can help your child learn independence and develop confidence. It will also remind your child that even though you are not there, he or she is never alone. The Lord goes to camp too!
