Homemade Play Dough Recipe

This recipe is also in my cookbook.  I love this play dough recipe because the play dough is much softer than that you buy in the store.  Little hands can smush it easier and you can get creative with the colors you make!  You can even add glitter I’m told but I’ve never personally done it.

Mix in a medium pot:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 4 tsp cream of tartar

Combine separately in a bowl and then add to the mixture above:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 to 2 tsp food coloring

Cook over meduim heat, stirring constantly for several minutes.  When it forms a ball and comes unstuck from the pan remove it from the heat; cool and knead.  It’s a fine lin between sticky play dough and cooked play dough so touch it with your finger a few times in a few different spots to make sure it doesn’t stick to you.  Alternatively, make sure you remove it from the heat before it begins to cook (get crusty).

It stores well in zip loc bags and air-tight containers.  Mine last almost up to a year as long as they stay in a sealed container.

This is a great idea for party favors.  It makes a lot so there’s plenty to pinch off a chunk for each child, put it in a zip loc baggie, and attach the recipe to the bag.  Kids love it!
